Ayurvedic Support for Trigeminal Neuralgia-Type Facial Pain: A Case Study
Introduction
Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a condition involving severe facial pain associated with irritation of the trigeminal nerve. From an Ayurvedic perspective, such presentations are often linked to an aggravation of pitta dosha, which is associated with inflammation. This case study describes the Ayurvedic approach taken to support a 39-year-old woman presenting with symptoms consistent with trigeminal neuralgia.
Presentation
The patient presented with severe facial and neck pain, initially considered for sinusitis but assessed as more consistent with trigeminal nerve involvement. A recent history of long-haul flights and antibiotic use pointed toward an underlying inflammatory pattern. Ayurvedic assessment identified a pitta dosha imbalance as a contributing factor.
A review of her dietary and lifestyle habits — late waking hours, spicy and inflammatory foods, and irregular meal timing — revealed patterns likely aggravating pitta and contributing to inflammation.
Approach
The plan focused on reducing inflammation, supporting digestion, and rebalancing pitta dosha over 28 days, structured in three phases:
Phase One (Week 1) — Strengthening digestive capacity and reducing inflammation using bitter-tasting herbs and ghee, alongside early rising and bowel-clearing routines.
Phase Two (Weeks 2–3) — Continued anti-inflammatory focus, with additional support targeted at the trigeminal nerve area.
Phase Three (Week 4) — Consolidating prior interventions and supporting nerve recovery
Dietary & Lifestyle Modifications
Early waking and morning bowel clearing
Adjusted meal timing and composition to reduce inflammatory load
Increased bitter-tasting foods; reduced pro-inflammatory foods
External therapies (herbal pastes, nasal drops) to help with localized pain and inflammation
Herbal Support
Formulations including Guluchyadi kashayam, Thikthakam gritham, and Avipathi choornam were used to support digestion and address inflammation, alongside external applications.
Outcome
Over the four-week period, the patient reported a noticeable reduction in facial pain and discomfort. She was advised to continue supportive dietary and lifestyle practices to help maintain the improvement.
Key Takeaways
Individualized assessment — considering diet, lifestyle, and constitutional factors — was central to the approach
Addressing digestive and inflammatory patterns appeared to support relief in this case
